About Dr. Betman

For two years in college Dr. Betman was lost (not literally).  He didn’t have a clue what to do with his life, despite his view that almost everybody else on campus knew what they wanted.  Psychology classes got his interest and the  rest, as they say, is history.  Getting into a Ph.D. program was difficult.  So, a masters degree led to a Ph.D. in clinical psychology.   Consistent action paid off and ultimately led to post-graduate work at a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital.

In his work, Dr. Betman likes to take the simple, straightforward approach.  Nothing fancy, but he gets the job done.  He enjoys solving problems and getting to the bottom of things.  Dr. Betman runs his business on two key principles:  always do what you say you will do and always return phone calls promptly.  These may sound like little things, but they make a big difference.  This means Dr. Betman is accessible to his clients and follows through on what he says he will do.

Mixing the serious work his clients come to him with, plus humor is a great way to get the job done. Coaching is life-changing work, but it can also be fun.  Clients often say Dr. Betman is easy to work with, has a great sense of humor, and helps them succeed with their coaching goals.

Dr. Betman is a fully licensed psychologist in Michigan.  He has over 22 years of clinical experience in both outpatient and inpatient settings.  Dr. Betman received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey.  He did postdoctoral training in Boston at a Harvard Hospital.  He is a member of both the American and Michigan Psychological Associations.

Dr. Betman is co-author of the book Today is Your Day where 50 top coaches share their secrets to success.  He produced a CD, which is very popular, titled 7 Secrets to Making Your Life Easier and More Fulfilling.

He is the author of The Kidbot Kaper: Mike and Jessie Meet Their Match, a great Science Fiction and Fantasy book for middle school readers.  All of Dr. Betman's "low level" sense of humor is on display in the book.

So, why coach with Dr. Betman?  First, He's been a licensed clinical psychologist since 1987.  He's worked in psychiatric hospitals, schools, clinics, universities and private practice in three different states seeing thousands of patients.  Second, coaching is different than psychotherapy, which is why Dr. Betman undertook intensive coach training with the premier training program that only works with therapists and psychologsts, not just anybody off the street.  Everybody that trains with mentorcoach is already in practice.

Third, he's studied and used time management systems over the past 30 years as they have evolved from Alan Lakein's book How to get control of your time and your life, through Franklin-Covey to Getting Things Done.  Finally, Dr. Betman has personally met, been coached by and studied with the greatest teachers of our time including Mike Litman, Christopher Guerriero, Bob Proctor, John Allen  Mollenhauer, Stephen Pierce, John DiLemme, and Rich Schefren.

Why has Dr. Betman done all this?  Well, of course it was to improve himself in every way possible. Plus, this is what he does professionally. p; And, it means you don't have to spend all the time, effort, and money he did.  It saves you a ton of time.  Gives you the shortcut to success and an easier life.

How I Work

I’ve been a licensed psychologist since 1987 working with individuals and groups of all ages.  I have worked in large medical centers (including Harvard), small clinics, and in private practice.  From this experience I have learned how to work most effectively with people.   I have a track record of success.

Guiding Beliefs

My belief when coaching is that you, the client, have all the answers.  I’m not the expert with all the answers.  I am expert at asking questions so you find answers for yourself.

You set the agenda.  Once the agenda is set, my job is to hold you to the agenda. If you get off track, I’ll help you get back on track.   If  you want to change the agenda, that’s fine.

The power is in the coaching relationship, not the coach.  The partnership between client and coach is greater than the sum of its parts.

Action and learning are critical for successful outcome.  Just taking action without change underneath produces short term results.  Coupling action with learning makes for lasting results.

A big part of successful coaching is accountability.  As your coach, I hold you accountable to follow through and do what we agreed upon.  It’s much better to say up front that you won’t do something, then agree to it and not do it.  Part of coaching is about taking action, not just talking about taking action.  Many people spend a lot of time getting ready to take action, but never do.

Expected Results

Get unstuck.  I will help you learn to work smarter, not harder.  Come up with a plan of action for your life, rather than just reacting to life.

Decrease your stress levels  Everything you come into contact with is potentially stressful.  Learn ways to manage stress and use it to your advantage.

Get your life back on track Figure out what really matters to you, and then live your life accordingly.  This is not about rigid goal setting.  This is about getting to the heart of what really matters to you, then putting your energy to what counts the most.

Financially, come from abundance, not poverty.  This is about mindset.  Ironically, the tighter you hold onto money, the harder it is to come by.  There is abundance everywhere you look, but maybe you aren’t seeing it right now.

Leave a legacy to the world.  Get some help thinking through what you want to contribute to the world and how you want to leave it a better place than you found it.  Sound corny?  Yes, but this is critical to your well-being and motivation on a daily basis.

Start enjoying life again.  We all know what we should be doing, but how many of us really do it?  Are you living each day to the fullest?  Put some fun back into your life.  Watch kids—they are carefree and can have fun anywhere.

Overall, start having an easier life!

My Approach

Talk with someone who knows how to move you forward.  Impulsive action wastes your time and energy.  Purposely deciding on a course of action, then pursuing it full out is the way to make great changes in your life.  Therapists and coaches serve different purposes; it helps to know who to talk with.

I work by phone or in-person with clients.  I am friendly and easy to work with.  Most people describe me as a “nice guy” with good manners.  I am accessible by phone or email.  I always return calls quickly and by end of business day at the latest.  I hold myself to high standards of accountability and therefore I do what I say I will do. If I won’t do something, you’ll know it up front.
